Chrissy Teigen and John Legend welcomed three beautiful children. Miles Theodore, their first son, was born in May 2018, and Luna Simon, their first daughter, was born in April 2016. Their most recent child, Esti Maxine, was born to them in January 2023, but not before they had a terrible heartbreak.
She was 20 weeks along when she was induced to give birth to the child, who her doctor told her had no chance of surviving. The couple, who have been married since 2013, and who are expecting their third child in 2020, were 20 weeks along at the time.
The miscarriage was brought on by partial placental abruption.
After the loss, she uploaded numerous photos of herself in the hospital, including one in which she and her husband were cradling their 20-week-old son as they said their goodbyes. Each photo was accompanied by a wrenching statement outlining why they were unable to carry the pregnancy to term.
“To our Jack: I’m so sorry you had such a challenging delivery and that we were unable to provide you the home you required to survive.
This was one of their “darkest days,” she wrote in the article, and she added that “every day can’t be full of brightness.” We will always cherish you, she concluded.
She received a ton of love and support, but she also received harsh criticism for uploading the images. John Legend has previously backed his wife’s decision to make the photographs public, but he is now doing so once more after a recent interview with Alex Cooper for her popular Call Her Daddy show.
He pointed out how revealing those details helped create “a sense of community” around something that many people had never revealed in public. He made others feel more at ease and offered them hope that they weren’t alone by learning how common this kind of pregnancy loss is.
When things started to go wrong, she had to be put on bed rest, and we were trying to save the pregnancy, she was talking about all of that. So it would have been odd to keep the outcome to oneself, he added, “because then it’s just like the baby just vanished and there’s no explanation.”
According to John Legend, he felt helpless in his role as the father.
John Legend continued by discussing how the miscarriage affected him, particularly how it felt to be the child’s father rather than the mother. He also commended his wife for having the courage to discuss those matters. He also expressed his deep appreciation for all the love and support they had received throughout everything.
“It’s hard because you feel – especially being the man in the relationship, not carrying the baby yourself – you feel this strong sense of grief but also this powerlessness, because you want to be there to protect, you want to be there to help, but you literally can’t do anything to really solve the core problem here,” the man said.
He also spoke up about how his family is doing since Esti’s birth in January. The situation, according to Legend, is “exciting” and his elder children, Miles (4 years old) and Luna (6 years old) get along well with their 2-month-old sister. He said that having a second child “just fills the house up with more love.”
He continued, “I’ve been around the block a few times, and my wife and I are “more comfortable” with who we are and how we raise our kids.” He continued, “So, dare I say, it’s easier,” saying that while it is never easy to raise a child, at this time they have found their rhythm and are accustomed to what to expect.
