Al Roker had throngs of fans and his Today coworkers watching out for him when he was sick late last year, but Deborah Roberts was his biggest supporter and caregiver.

The beloved weatherman, who has been a part of Today for thirty years, had a health crisis at the end of last year due to blood clots in his lungs, which put his life in danger. From late November through January 6th, 2023, he missed Today’s episodes because he was in and out of the hospital.

His health has improved, and he is back on Today, with the exception of an impending knee replacement operation. But, his wife of 27 years can’t help but notice that they are still recovering from the tough time.

At the premiere of Brooke Shields’ documentary, Beautiful Baby, Deborah—an ABC News news anchor—opened up to Entertainment Tonight about her role as her husband’s caregiver.

She continued, “I think a lot of people don’t realize how tremendously depleting, stressful, terrifying, all of those things, being a carer is. And I never understood that.

The journalist stated, “I’ve never encountered anything like this, and I hope I won’t do it again.”

But it’s dreadful, she added, adding that despite Al being in much better health, it has been difficult to get through the difficult period. “I’m still kind of recovering,” she continued. I still feel a little exhausted. I still feel mentally exhausted.

But well, I’m grateful and just trying to enjoy the moment and just be happy that he’s okay, and we’re all good, she concluded.

In addition to Al being “back to driving me crazy,” Deborah is fortunate to have a solid support network. Deborah said, “My faith and spirituality helped me through it. That’s how I dealt with my husband’s health issue.

“My family and coworkers gave me support as I struggled. When I felt like I wouldn’t be able to succeed, my colleagues, many of whom are here right now, cheered me on. The fact that people were there sending texts, emails, and phone calls made the difference.
