The legendary duo of Hollywood was Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward. These two soulmates demonstrated to the world what true love is and what each of us should look for in the person we decide to spend eternity with through a marriage that lasted five decades.
When they first met, Scott Newman, Susan Kendall Newman, and Stephanie Newman were all children of Paul’s first marriage to Jackie Witte. They were wed for nine years and first met when Paul wasn’t yet well-known.
During his Broadway debut in the play Picnic, Paul first met Joanne, his second wife and the ultimate love of his life. The dashing 28-year-old Paul appeared “like an ice cream soda ad,” according to Joanne, wearing an immaculate seersucker suit and showing no signs of perspiration.
Joanne really captivated Paul despite the fact that he was married at the time. Nevertheless, they remained close friends and stayed in touch until 1957, when they finally reunited while shooting The Long, Hot Summer. Witte, Paul’s wife, ultimately made the decision to file for divorce once she realized Paul had fallen in love with Joanne. Paul admitted that he was feeling “guilty as hell” and that he was “probably too immature to make a success of my first marriage,” even though he never really wanted to talk about his first wife and was telling publications that that part of his life was none of anyone’s business.
In 1958, Paul and Joanne were united in marriage and moved into their 18th-century Connecticut farmhouse. She felt that relocating to Connecticut let them “always enjoy each other’s company” even though they were never really a Hollywood couple.
Joanne received an Academy Award for Best Actress for The Three Faces of Eve in the year she married Paul. Joanne received three Oscar nominations over the course of her career for her work in Summer Wishes, Winter Dreams (1974), Mr. & Mrs. Bridge (1991), and Rachel, Rachel (in which she starred in 1969). For her roles in Do You Remember Love (1985) and See How She Runs (1978), she was honored with two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actress. Five further nominations were made for her.
For his part in the motion picture The Color of Money, Paul received an Oscar. The duo co-starred in ten movies, and they both continue to be among the most well-known actors in cinematic history.
Joanne said to Today, “He’s very good-looking and very sexy, but all of that goes out the window and what is ultimately left is if you can make somebody laugh.” And boy, does he make me laugh.
In fact, their love was so intense, sincere, and passionate that their tale is among the most romantic celebrity love stories ever told.
Together, the Golden Couple gave birth to three daughters: Claire Olivia, Melissa Stewart, and Ellinor Teresa. Although they were devoted and loving parents, Paul could never forgive himself for his son Scott’s 1975 drug overdose death.
Their daughter Claire spoke candidly to the Daily Mail about her mother, saying, “My mother was much ahead of her time. She was active in women’s rights before it was popular, and she was a hands-on mother who nursed me while I was a baby on set. In the middle of scenes, she would pause the filming and apologize, saying, “Sorry, I’ve got to feed the baby.”
They were evidently destined to be together with anybody who knew them. They were once seen together, and author Carol Joynt described Joanne Woodward as sitting on the ground with her legs out in front and her back against a large tree. Paul Newman’s head was on her lap, and as he enjoyed the music, he would periodically reach up to touch her face and hair. I might have gaped. It remains the most romantic thing I’ve ever seen.
Sadly, lung cancer claimed Paul’s life in 2008. The Hollywood power couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary before he said his final goodbyes.
As Ethan Hawke directed a documentary about them, the screens displayed their story, which was reminiscent of a fairy tale. He stated that he would provide “a rare and exclusive look at the careers of both actors and a complex 50-year relationship that ultimately managed to beat incredible odds,” and he did not disappoint.
Family friend Bob Forrester described the couple as having the love of newlyweds in an interview with People. “Even after 50 years of marriage, Paul would call Joanne whenever I would travel with him anywhere in the world, and he would always say, “I love you. She was everything to him. They had been soul mates.
Joanne and other charities received the Newman inheritance after the passing of her devoted husband.
According to Joanne, their marriage’s success was rather straightforward.
“Without concern for mockery or rejection, we were able to communicate with one another and tell one other everything. She stated that there existed trust, as reported by Honey Nine.
The actress Joanna Woodward has given up acting. She is currently 93 years old and hasn’t appeared in public very often since lending her voice as Doris in the 2013 film Lucky Them.
She is reportedly facing a challenging health struggle.
Woodward, according to Closer Magazine, is coping with Alzheimer’s. According to USA Today, Joanne received her diagnosis in 2007, just a few days before Paul Newman received his fatal cancer diagnosis.
After the 2022 premiere of Ethan Hawke’s intimate six-part docuseries about Woodward and Newman, Woodward was once more in the public eye.
Joanne might be able to enjoy it, I hope.
In 2020, Hawke stated, “That’s why the family wanted me to do it now,” and continued:
To support her, they wanted it to be revealed while she is still alive and aware of it.
According to Closer, Joanne Woodward continues to reside in the Connecticut house in Westport where her late husband passed away in 2008 at the age of 83.
