Simon Cowell has had some health concerns, especially after suffering injuries in two separate bike incidents over a two-year period.
When he appeared on the most recent episode of the Today Show with hosts Terry Crews, Howie Mandel, and Heidi Klum as well as his colleagues America’s Got Talent judges, he talked about how those events changed his life.
As part of a promotion for the upcoming 18th season of the competition show, he was asked about how the experiences changed his outlook on life.
He claimed that because I was so unfit prior to the accident, it wasn’t fantastic, just dreadful. And I didn’t understand how unfit I was until I had to do all the follow-up work.
I then yell, “My god!” Simon continued, “Things like that, I believe happen for a purpose,” despite his insistence that he wouldn’t be giving up his bike anytime soon.
To the surprise of his co-stars, he said, “I’m still going to stay on my bike, I’m obsessed with these things.
The next crash was less catastrophic but still caused a shattered back, and Simon was brought to the hospital with a possible concussion and a broken arm. Additionally, he was observed with a wrist brace for a number of weeks.
Simon was motivated by the circumstances to lead a generally healthier lifestyle, notably for the benefit of his nine-year-old son Eric, thanks to his fiancée Lauren Silverman.
In April of last year, he spoke with The Sun about the repercussions of his e-bike injuries, saying: “When I fractured my back, I considered therapy for the first time because I was very, very, very, low.
“I felt rather depressed because I didn’t know how to explain it to Eric. What I could do with him was constrained. I didn’t know if I’d ever be able to walk or play football with him again.
The actor revealed that after his bike accident the previous summer, his kid came up with an excellent moniker for him when Simon and Lauren welcomed Eric on Valentine’s Day in 2014.
In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Britain’s Got Talent judge acknowledged that he felt “embarrassed” after the encounter and went home.
The treatment left him with metal rods and screws in his back. When the man reached his family, Simon recalled, “He said, “Dad, you look like Iron Man.” I affirmed, “Yeah, I’m like Iron Man, yeah.”
Since then, Simon has had the opportunity to mock his blunders as well, recalling his first, more serious mishap in June 2021 while participating in American Idol.
Terry asked Simon whether he ever saw himself doing that with Eric in a family-oriented audition event after watching a father-son pair perform a dangerous Shaolin Kung Fu act.
After breaking his back, Simon jokingly remarked to the two, “I kind of got to the point where I’m going around the garden with him and I think it’s a huge issue. And when I’m doing it, I consider, “Maybe not so great!”
