Years After Adopting Little Silviu, David Received a Call from a Lawyer

“Mr. Popescu,” the man on the phone said. “I’m calling on behalf of your adoptive son’s biological parents…”

“What do you want?” David asked sharply.

“I would like to speak with you…” the lawyer said hesitantly.

“I’m not interested,” David replied coldly. “These people abandoned my son. There’s nothing you could say that would change that.”

“Please, Mr. Popescu,” the lawyer pleaded. “For Silviu’s sake.”

Reluctantly, David agreed to meet with the lawyer. When he arrived, the man handed him a letter.

“This will explain everything much better than I ever could, Mr. Popescu,” the lawyer said.

David hesitated before unfolding the letter, his hands slightly trembling. He had spent years building a life for Silviu, shielding him from the pain of abandonment, and now—these people suddenly wanted to explain themselves?

With a deep breath, he began to read.

“Dear Mr. Popescu,

We don’t expect you to forgive us. We don’t expect Silviu to understand. But please, let us at least explain.

We never wanted to abandon our son. We loved him—more than anything. But we had no choice. At the time of his birth, we were caught in a situation that was beyond our control. My wife, Emilia, was gravely ill, and I had no job, no money, and no way to take care of a newborn. We made the hardest decision of our lives—leaving Silviu at the adoption agency, hoping he would find a family who could give him everything we couldn’t.

For years, we have lived with regret. We searched for him, but we were told that his adoption was final, and we had no right to contact him. So we let go, believing it was for the best.

But now… things have changed.

Emilia is dying. And before she goes, her only wish is to see our son one last time—not to take him from you, not to disrupt his life, but just to tell him that we never stopped loving him.

Please, Mr. Popescu… if you can find it in your heart, let us see him—just once.

Sincerely,
Andrei & Emilia Bălan

David clenched his jaw, his emotions a storm inside him. He had no obligation to these people. Silviu was his son. He was the one who had fed him, held him through sleepless nights, and wiped his tears.

But at the same time…

He looked at the lawyer. “Does Silviu know?”

The lawyer shook his head. “Not yet. We wanted to speak with you first.”

David exhaled, rubbing his temple. He didn’t trust these people. But could he deny a dying woman her last wish?

That night, he sat beside Silviu’s bed, watching his peaceful face. He had spent years protecting his son. But now, was it his decision to make?

The next morning, he made a call. “Set up the meeting,” he told the lawyer.

Because no matter how much it hurt, Silviu deserved to know the truth.
